7 Reasons Why Avatar: The Last Airbender Is The Most Complete TV Show Ever
3. Proper Inclusivity
One of the best changes to come to television and film in general these days is a more inclusive choice of cast. However this hasn’t come without its own pitfalls. Often, showrunners manage to get it horrible wrong by depicting certain groups in ways they are not meant to be. Even worse are the cases where studios just completely ignore the identity of characters and end up casting people not belonging to said group.
The Avatar franchise was itself caught in a similar storm thanks to the film made by M. Night Shyamalan, and the less said about that film, the better.
But there was no such issue with the original series. In fact, the Last Airbender once more proved to be an early trendsetter with regards to how well it showcased its diverse cast. We saw major characters with disabilities, then there was the constant chipping away of gender and other stereotypes, and finally it is also worth mentioning how well the show presented the various real life cultures that served as inspiration for the ones inside this universe.
Whether it was the fighting techniques that were borrowed from Chinese martial arts or architectural designs adopted from China and Inuit cultures, or even the different lifestyles taken from groups on such as the Tibetan Monks, all of it was done in an accurate, respectful and visually spectacular way.
