7 Reasons Why You Need To Revisit Californication

3. The Romance

David Duchovny Californication
Showtime

Outside of the humour and ridiculous situations Hank finds himself in, there is actually a pretty effective romance.

Though Hank is a serial womaniser - and pretty damn proud of himself for it - the one woman he can never get over is his ex, Karen (Natasha McElhone). Karen is Becca’s mother, and by his own assessment, she is also Hank’s soul mate.

Unfortunately, his scandalous lifestyle prevents them from properly being together, and though they do occasionally reignite their passion for one another it never stays around for long, usually because of something Hank has done.

But they remain close throughout the show, and their relationship – both as a couple, as enemies and as friends – forms the major narrative of the show, a part of Hank’s story which you can’t help but wish turns out well and happy. Which (SPOILERS) it thankfully seems to.

It’s a rollercoaster of a story, but it’s also well worth the ride.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
