7 Shocking TV Moments That Changed Everything

2. Lost - What's Inside The Hatch?

I have been moaned at on messaging boards for expressing, often in ranting ways, my dislike of Lost- or at least what Lost became, and my pure disappointment of the shows appalling final season and final episode- so I will try to keep my disappointment bottled in a little here. Back when I still loved the show, I remember the opening scene of Season 2 blew my mind like I never thought was possible. In season 1 we knew very little of what was going on in the Island (in fact, we never really knew all that much) and at the end of the season, when Locke and Jack found away to open up the hatch, I had no idea of what was inside. I definitely didn't imagine what was revealed at the beginning of Season 2. The reveal changed everything about Lost, introducing us to a mythology and history of the island with much more depth than season 1 would have had us assume. In fact, the whole point of season 2 (my favorite season of the show) was all about exploring what was going on in the hatch, before it was later destroyed at the end of the season. Season 2 opens as we watch a man, though we never see his face, go through a pretty average morning. It looks as if he is living a fairly comfortable life all by himself, and as a viewer we were pretty confused at what the hell we were supposed to be witnessing. In fact, most of us probably assumed that this was some kind of flashback. As the scene continues on, we slowly get hints at what we are witnessing, until the scene ends where Season 1 left off... seeing Jack and Locke looking down into the hatch. It turned out that this mysterious hatch door that had been a huge mystery in the shows first season was in fact housing a mysterious person. I don't know about you, but I certainly wasn't expecting that this was what was in the hatch- my guess was something a little more supernatural- but never the less, this scene was amazing, and the unexpectedness of it all, and the complete juxtaposition to island life it conveyed, is my all time favorite moment of the entire show (even more than the first flash-forward). Man, I miss when this show still had potential. Lost Season 2 Intro
