1. Glee - Santana is a Lesbian Now?
I kept this until the end, not because it is the most shocking reveal on this list, or because it is my all time favorite (this list is not ranked) but because, as one of my all time favorite shows- probably the show I enjoy watching the most (except for Buffy that is), this reveal truly did surprise me, and gave me new reason to love this TV show. Santana started off the series pretty much as my least favorite character. Most of the time she was purely a bitch, and the only purpose she really had was to come between all of the relationships on the show... Finn and Rachel, Puck and Mercedes (remember this happening), Puck and Quinn, and Sam and Quinn- she pretty much was the reason why most of these couples at one point during the show broke up. Santana didn't really have all that much of a purpose, and certainly very very little character development... until one moment changed all that. She revealed to the audience that she was a lesbian. You could argue that this is an obvious trick to draw a new fan base into a show, and maybe this is at first what appealed the writers to change Santana's sexual orientation (or make clear what team she was always supposed to be on deep down), but this reveal was really powerful, and really worked. This was nothing like Marissa going lesbian for Olivia Wilde briefly in the O.C, this was much more on the same level as Willow falling for Tara. I believed the transition and could accept that Santana had always been a lesbian (though I strongly believe the writers hadn't known this from the beginning)- that is the power of a really good song for you. Santana sings Fleetwood Mac's Landslide, and in that one song, just through a look in Naya Rivera's eyes, we can see that the character has truly discovered that she is a lesbian whereas before she didn't really know what sexuality she was. This one song, and this one subtle but beautiful reveal pretty much instantly made one of my least favorite characters into my favorite characters. I now could feel sympathy for a character that had up until this one episode in Season 2, had just been for the most part a conniving, unsympathetic bitch. This one song also made a character which was mostly in the background, into a character who got more solos and parts in songs than pretty much any other member of the cast- accept of course for Rachel. When Glee works, it really really works- and this is one of their best ever scenes as seen on my list (
