7 Theories on Doctor Who Series 7

5. The Errant Phone Charger

A Town Called Mercy: Once they€™ve entered the town of Mercy, The Doctor notices the flickering electric lamps around the town. Pointing out that electricity isn€™t due for another ten years or so, Rory says that it€™s close enough, which prompts The Doctor to reply "That's what you said when you left your cell charger in Henry VIII's en suite." So the story so far: Amy marries King Henry VIII by accident, Rory leaves his phone charger back in the en suite, and The Ponds decide to go off with The Doctor to Mercy. (Also, they€™re wearing the same clothes from The Power of Three in A Town Called Mercy.) Though reading more into the obvious Doctor/Kahler Jex, we find The Doctor being quite hard on himself. He draws a parallel to Jex€™s experiments and his own personal behavior, criticizing Jex for transplanting himself to an alien town where he could absolve himself of his sins by doing good for others. This culminates with The Doctor€™s now infamous line, €œYou don€™t get to choose your punishment!€ On the surface, it€™s easy to parallel this with The Doctor€™s previous history as the man who killed all of the Daleks and Time Lords at the end of the Time War. However, when the Previous Chronology theory is applied, it looks like The Doctor€™s guilt for letting harm befall Amy and Rory is getting to him. He doesn€™t get to choose his punishment, and he €œcarries his prison with him€, so why should anyone else be better off?
