7 TV Comedies Led By Women That Totally Nailed It

7. The Mindy Project

You might know Vera Mindy Chokalingam better by her professional name of Mindy Kaling. You might know her even better by the name of Kelly Kapoor, the character she portrayed in the very successful American version of "The Office". Not too many people know that Kaling actually got her start at this critically acclaimed sitcom as a part of the writing staff, and was the first female member there, at the tender age of 24. In total, she has written at least 22 episodes, including one for which she got co-nominated for an Emmy. But we're not here to talk about "The Office". On September 25, 2012, Fox premiered a new TV comedy that depicted the storyline of a successful female gynecologist in a NYC practice, whose other associates are strictly men. Mindy Kaling was now a star of a new show, which she also created (basing on her mother's experience as an OB-GYN), co-wrote and produced. "The Mindy Project is not just soulful and amusing", The Washington Post wrote. "It takes a genre full of clichés, adds something fresh and spins it into gold". Also, notably, the show is not afraid to take a full-figured woman of color, put her in a high power position, and still show her weaknesses in an endearing fashion. If you haven't watched it yet, there's time to catch up, as the show is on a mid-season hiatus until April 1st.
