7 TV Comedies Led By Women That Totally Nailed It

6. 2 Broke Girls

The very comically named Whitney Cummings (she jokes about it a lot) got her first break in Showbiz on MTV's Punk'd in 2004. After that, she began performing stand-up and guest starred late-nights like "The Tonight Show" and "Last Call", building a name for herself. Fast-forward to 2011, and two of Cummings' sitcoms were picked up. "Whitney", where she was the executive producer, creator and star, got picked up by NBC, but got cancelled by the second season. With no offense to Cummings, this was not a great loss to television history. On the other hand, "2 Broke Girls" which she co-created and produced with Michael Patrick King and got picked up by CBS, is still airing its third season. And thank God for that. "2 Broke Girls" is set in the Williamsburg neighborhood of the Brooklyn, NY and chronicles the lives of two waitresses in their mid twenties; Max Black (Kat Dennings) who comes from a poor working-class family, and Caroline Channing (Beth Behrs), who was born rich but is now penniless due to her father embezzling most of NYC. This sitcom can be rude, crude, sometimes racists and maybe sexist, but it can't be any funnier or full of wit. And look at that, not one, but two female main characters. Might I add that Dennings comedic timing is impeccable. "Broke is rich with laughs, warmth and credibility", The San Francisco Chronicle writes, and adds, "the performances by the two lead actresses are instantly winning, both individually and as they play off each other". And to top it all, it's about the financial crisis, front and center. Got to love that statement.
