7 TV Shows With Near-Perfect Endings
5. Community
For a series so meta to the point where it was aware of its demise and previous cancellations, Community did have an ending in mind that was less about narrative and structure, and more about completing a joke foretold long ago.
Because the series didn't so much as break the fourth wall but assimilate and dissect the audience looking in from the fourth wall, it was interesting to watch a series stretch out and poke at the tropes we obliviously ignore and go along with. It is with that genius-level writing and structure of the series, that the ending to Community was downright near-perfect.
In the final episode, the series turns the tables and parodies itself in a bizarre clip-show parade as the characters, sat around the infamous study room table, pitch their ideas for a hypothetical seventh season/year at Greendale Community College.
As everyone pitches their ideas, ranging from the narratively realistic (B-level supporting characters eventually being promoted to series regulars to replace the departed original cast) to the disturbingly obscure (an animated ice-cube sidekick) it becomes abundantly clear that everyone's time at Greendale should come to an end. And our time with Community too.
As the season six characters embrace the humbled Jeff, who takes everything coming to an end the hardest, we get to see a quick scene of Abed and Annie leave Greendale for good, and the remaining cast toast their unknown future. And at the very last second, a little hashtag for the fans.
