4. Malcolm In The Middle

The Leftovers Finale
Fox

At some point everyone watched at least one episode of Malcolm In The Middle, and to pinpoint what happened on the last episode is a rare thing to find but you'll be moved by how the series chose to conclude its tale of a genius child growing up in a working-class family.

In the final episode, Malcolm is offered a chance at the good life making big bucks that could set him up for life and support his chaotic family. The one condition is that because of his age, the move requires consent from his parents. His mother Lois, being the controlling matriarch of the household, blocks the opportunity and Malcolm misses his chance of escaping poverty.

One of the final scenes shows the Wilkerson family covered in sewage and Malcolm berating his mother for obstructing him once again. It is at this point that Lois delivers an honest monologue, summing up everything that has happened in the series; Malcolm doesn't get the easy route to success. Lois explains to Malcolm that people like him will always be looked down on, and if he takes the easy route he'll forget where he came from and be like everyone else.

The last shot of the series shows Malcolm at Harvard about to attend a class, but not before finishing up his job as a custodial for the college itself. We're treated to the hope that Malcolm will still be humbled by his childhood regardless of what happened before the finale.

I overthink a lot of things. Will talk about pretty much anything for a great length of time. I'm obsessed with General Slocum from the 2002 Spider-Man film. I have questions that were never answered in that entire trilogy!
