A dark, gritty dystopian series focusing on the state of the human population 97 years after a nuclear apocalypse, The 100 has spent the past six seasons allowing us to see how mankind eventually rose from the ashes, and it will come to an end when its final season airs sometime next year.

That doesn't, however, mean we've seen the last of this universe - quite the opposite, in fact - as the show will follow in its Vampire Diaries-verse and Arrowverse predecessors by spawning its own spin-off series. But don't expect any of the main characters to feature, as the spin-off will be a prequel that will allow us to see what actually happened in the immediate aftermath of the nuclear apocalypse that changed it all.

The concept will be introduced as a backdoor pilot in one of the final episodes of The 100 - an episode that will be written by showrunner Jason Rothenberg.

The 100 is, without a doubt, one of The CW's most consistent shows and now we're finally going to find out how it all came to be 97 years ago. Very exciting indeed.
