7 Ways The Greatest Show In The Galaxy Is The Most Meta Doctor Who Ever

7. The Plot Device Joke

It€™s a €œblink and you€™ll miss it€ moment early in the story but the script is having a lot of fun playing with Doctor Who conventions. From poking fun at McCoy€™s buffoonish early stories by having him read from €œJuggling for the Complete Klutz€ to some throwbacks to the show€™s history via Ace digging about in the TARDIS, it all seems par for the course. After all, much of Jon Nathan Turner€™s regime had been about reusing or referring to the past. But then the daft Junk Mail Robot, replete with irritating personality, pops up in the TARDIS and tells them about the psychic circus. It€™s a sudden appearance with no apparent rhyme nor reason. But then, in Who, fans sometimes have to wonder why the Doctor seems to always head places that are earmarked for trouble. Surely, as a Time Lord, he must have some inkling of when and where are bad places to travel? What seems like a typically deus ex TARDIS is neatly punctured when the Doctor dismisses the junk robot with the line, €œIt€™s just a device to get us to go".
