8 Alternate TV Endings Much Better Than What We Got

2. Friends: The One That's More Ambiguous

Ross and Rachel getting together in the end was the conclusion everyone saw a mile off. In many ways it was fan-pleasing, but how about some ambiguity?

That's the direction Friends creator David Crane was toying with, and he almost went with the same final act minus the scene that explicitly shows the pair re-coupling.

"Do you get Ross and Rachel back together? And at first we were like, 'That seems so expected.' Maybe not. Maybe we do some kind of vague hope for the future."

TV shows don't necessarily need to tie things up in a neat package with a bow on top, and this conclusion would certainly have made Friends' finale more interesting.

Public opinion on Ross seems to have gone down the drain in hindsight, so an ambiguous ending would have at least given his harshest critics the chance to envisage an endgame for Rachel they felt was more befitting.

When people get all nostalgic over Friends, they rarely reminisce about the ending because it was so predictable, vanilla and straight-laced. If Crane had called time on the beloved sitcom in a more open-ended way, that certainly wouldn't be the case.
