8 Amazing Red Dwarf Details You Never Noticed
7. Backwards Fourth Wall Break
Backwards marked a new precedent for Red Dwarf on its initial release. The first episode of the third season, we saw changes in both Kryten and Holly, as well as a mark up in production value.
Such as it was that we had an episode that relied heavily on sequences shot forwards and played backwards, such as Lister and Cat riding a bike and a massive bar room un-rumble near the end.
Yet one of the show's highlights comes in the form of comedian Arthur Smith's cameo as the disgruntled bar owner. For the unsuspecting, he's just yelling at Rimmer and Kryten [in reverse] for the upcoming fight.
But to those with the means to uncover what he's saying, he's not addressing Rimmer. Here's what he actually says:
"I'm pointing at you, I'm pointing at you, but I'm not actually addressing you, I'm addressing the one prat in the entire country who's bothered to get hold of this recording, turn it round and actually work out the rubbish that I'm saying. What a poor, sad life he's got!"
Reversed fourth wall insults. That was a new one.
