8 Amazing Red Dwarf Details You Never Noticed

6. Kochanski's Body Double

Right from the off, Red Dwarf liked to mess around with all sorts of futuristic concepts. Time travel, paradoxes, changing fates and timelines... you name it.

One such episode, Stasis Leak, in the second series saw Lister exploit a "magic door" to change his past. This allows him to change the fates of himself and Kochanski, the crew member he pines after, and rewrite their history.

Of course, in typical Red Dwarf fashion, this doesn't go as smoothly as planned. In this instance, another Lister has beaten him to it, causing all sorts of doppelganger shenanigans in the process. It's at the end of the episode that we see a culmination in how many other counterparts there are.

Except... that isn't Kochanski as we know her.

That is to say, that's not Claire Grogan, the actress who played early iterations of the character. Grogan was unavailable for the additional shooting due to schedule conflicts, so they made do with a stand in.

And as you can see, a very big hat.

Just goes to show that in a programme with split-screen and effects, sometimes all you need is a giant prop.
