2. A Trip To The Dentist (Air Date: May 5th 2005)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wC9MTQJnHSY Rob Thomas has gone on record and said this to be his favourite Veronica Mars episode and for good reason. Parallel to the Lilly Kane murder investigation in season one, ran another long story arc: that of a party Veronica attended when she lost her virginity... she was drugged and raped. Thus, her reaction during Spit & Eggs. 'A Trip To The Dentist', season 1's penultimate offering ties several running storylines together, as Veronica attempts to piece together the scraps and fragments of people's accounts to discover who was the culprit and her assailant. The scene I've attached above is the climax, during which Veronica confronts ex (and future) boyfriend Duncan Kane about the incident, learning they did sleep together, albeit conscientiously and Duncan's previous silence about the incident stemmed from his discovery and belief that Veronica could have been his sister- she wasn't, more on that in a second. As it turns out, Veronica was raped that night, prior to sleeping with Duncan- an incident that wouldn't be fully explained until Season 2's finale, a year later. In addition to this, Veronica and Logan's relationship was outed when they arrived at Logan's house, only to find Logan's father had thrown him surprise party with everyone invited. Logan makes an impassioned speech defending Veronica from the sneers and jeers of his fellow 09ers before admitting guilt in the incident during which she was raped, as he provided the drug that she was spiked- albeit it, inadvertently- with. Veronica quickly forgives him, seemingly over it and on the verge of sleeping with Logan for the first time, she spies a hidden camera above the bed, watching them. Horrified, thinking it's Logan's doing, she splits. It wasn't and it would prove to be the deal-breaker in discovering Lilly's killer- more on THAT in a second too! To cap it all of, Veronica returns home at the episodes end to find her alcoholic mother, whom had done a runner at the top of the whole series, leaving her heartbroken had come home. A Trip To The Dentist was a Tour De Force of roller-coaster emotions and tying long-running story-lines together, to the most satisfying effect. Veronica's belief and relief that her virginity wasn't taken against her will becomes all the more tragic when we discover it, indeed, was later on. The continuous whirlwind that was her relationship with Logan hit new heights with the discovery of the video camera. Her mom's return- so long desired by Veronica- only would turn to bring more grief. All in all, what this episode did superbly was provide answers to long running questions, which, in turn, only brought more questions. I suppose that's what you call good writing. Oh and speaking of long running questions...
