8 Craziest TV Fan Theories (That Actually Make Total Sense)

4. The Characters In Spongebob Are All Radioactive Mutants

Nickelodeon

Continuing with the children€™'s TV theme, let€™'s look at Spongebob Squarepants. A gurning sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea, his best friend is a talking starfish. Well, this is kids television. This stuff happens. But one theory has it that these characters can talk, wear clothes and get up to hilarious kooky hi-jinks (as opposed to how sea sponges and starfish, etc, act in the wild, all sensible and such) because of their exposure to DNA-warping levels of radiation over the years.

Sound insane? Well€ the characters live in a town called Bikini Bottom on the sea bed, which might be just a humorous play on words, except that the original synopsis for the show confirms that Bikini Bottom is below the tropical paradise of Bikini Atoll in the Pacific. And Bikini Atoll was the site of 23 nuclear tests between 1946 and 1958. These nuclear tests comprised the detonation of actual nuclear warheads all across the area €“ including under the sea and on the reef itself.

These tests rendered Bikini Atoll completely unsuitable for human habitation, poisoning the air, land and water.
