Among James Acheson's many credits from his illustrious career as a costume designer is his work on 1970s Doctor Who. It was Acheson who helped design the basic look of the Fourth Doctor, and who supplied Begonia Pope - a witty little knitter - with the wool to create the iconic scarf. Some people may rest on their laurels after designing such an iconic look that endures today, but not Acheson.

In the intervening years, he worked on Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies, Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits and Brazil, and also Highlander. Which is quite the resume! Acheson has received three Academy Awards for his work on The Last Emperor, Dangerous Liaisons, and Restoration. He's not the first behind-the-scenes figure from the BBC in those days to make the successful move to Hollywood.

Back in the 1960s, the design job for the Daleks was almost given to a young guy called Ridley Scott. Scott was moved elsewhere, and has since gone on to greener pastures than the Television Centre canteen.
