When Doctor Who returned in 2005, it was immediately clear that the visual effects had come some way since the late 1980s. This was thanks to the Mill, a UK-based VFX studio that worked on the series and its related spin-offs until they closed their TV division in 2013. Interestingly, their first foray into Doctor Who was with The Curse of Fatal Death - Hugh Grant's (first?) appearance as the Doctor.

The Mill had Oscar gold in their collection prior to working on Doctor Who however. Their film division was responsible for the visual effects on What-If? Dalek designer Ridley Scott's Gladiator from 2000. They worked with Scott again on Black Hawk Down in the following year. They also worked on the first Harry Potter movie before the film division closed their doors in 2002.

The TV division wasn't shy of awards recognition for their work on Doctor Who, having been nominated for several BAFTA craft awards and eventually winning for their work on the Doctor Who episodes Fires of Pompeii and The Next Doctor.
