The first five seasons of Smallville actually did a pretty good job with telling the story of the young Clark Kent, but it was all downhill from there. As well as messing up characters like Lex Luthor and Lana Lang, the whole "no tights, no flights" rule really started holding the show back, and Superman soon started coming across as the worst superhero in his own show. Even his cousin Supergirl made him look like a chump. In a desperate bid to prolong the story, Clark was put in a black trencoat to fight crime (the closest the show ever got to a costume, but even then he was still a blur) and not even the series finale managed to redeem years worth of misfires. Tom Welling donned the iconic suit, but was only seen from the neck up, and so it ended up being a blessed relief when Smallville came to an end and stopped damaging Superman's legacy.
