8 Greatest Series Revivals In TV History

4. Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek rightly deserves a place on television. The movies might be exciting events but much of what makes Star Trek Star Trek is lost in favour of thrilling action sequences and huge character moments. On television, Star Trek has these but it also has the time to explore the premise of going boldly where no one has gone before. Science and exploration twined with the dangers of outer space. Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan worked so well because it blended science - Genesis - with the drama of Khan's epic return. It is a film never bettered for that and many other reasons. So with the success of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Gene Roddenberry and Paramount sought out a triumphant return to television. After the abandoned premise of a cadet-based TV series, Star Trek: The Next Generation was born. It might have taken a couple of seasons to find its feet but the show developed into one of the finest interpretations of Star Trek ever seen on the small screen. Its success spawned the brilliant Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (though it arguably deviated from the central premise), Star Trek: Voyager and finally Star Trek: Enterprise. While Star Trek did eventually reach saturation point, there was no denying that it as the king of cult television during the 1990s. With the 50th anniversary approaching, there is talk of a new Star Trek series, with Bryan Singer executive producing. There is no concrete information yet, but the likelihood of a second television resurrection can't be that far away.
