Watch any other adaptation of the Punisher and you'll notice a recurring trend - everyone who has played Frank Castle has played him as an action hero through and through.

Now, there isn't anything inherently wrong with that approach. Punisher readers will be the first to tell you that the character has taken on a variety of different forms in the comics, and that of the nineties action star, perhaps best exemplified by the War Journal comics of the late eighties and early nineties, is one such form.

It's the kind we've seen before in Dolph Lundgren's portrayal, and to a degree in Thomas Jane's. Ray Stevenson exemplifies this version to the fullest, but it's not the one that featured in the character's best stories.

Bernthal's, on the other hand, actually is, and one of the ways he manages to convey this new version is by placing Frank's military experience front and centre throughout his performance. Castle truly handles himself like a soldier, whether that be something as subtle as trigger discipline, the way he's constantly scanning the environment or even how he uses firearms themselves; all coalesce to impart the impression that Frank is the real deal, and not just some character ripped from some forgettable Schwarzenegger flick from the 1980s.
