One of the tell-all signs of a Bernthal performance is the classic head scratch. Every now and then, Frank will bow his head and run his hand through the back of his hair, and though it's not something unique to that character (the actor has used the same tic in other performances), there is another that is proper genius.

At times, in conversation with another character, Frank will squint his eyes for the briefest of seconds. It's almost like he's staring right through them, daring them to reveal their true intentions whilst also making them contemplate whether their current course of action really is a good idea.

It has the ability to both antagonise and diffuse certain situations, but it also intimates Frank's ability to perceive threats.

That, when taken together with his introverted posture, immediately telegraphs that he's not to be approached, and that he may even be on edge. It's up to the viewer to decide whether or not that's his real self.
