No doubt about it, the Frank Castle of the comics is a man who seeks out violence and confrontation. He has an ideology, a creed, and that is to 'punish' the guilty by doing what no one else appears capable of.

That's the version of the character we see in Daredevil Season 2, but there's an important delineation to be made. The Punisher of this world is far more reactive than proactive; after getting his revenge, or what he thinks is his revenge at first, he is quite content to float underneath the radar. Whenever he has to use violence, it is with great reluctance, but at the same time, he's able to exact violence with extreme prejudice, preempting harm by meeting it with a surprise attack.

And yet, for all we make of Frank Castle being a one-man-army, it's clear that there's an inner struggle between wanting to survive and wanting to help.

That's a really interesting idea to explore, and it's one Bernthal conveys both before and after confrontation. He seems to be able to read all the signs of impending danger, but he just can't stay out of trouble.
