Despite only airing one bona fide new episode in the 1990s, Doctor Who was still a big deal. There was a repeat run of selected serials on BBC2 and the whole series aired on satellite channel UK Gold each Saturday and Sunday morning.

Doctor Who also had enough cultural cache to be used in various advertising promotions. Volkswagen was one such company that decided to cash in on the fondness for the series, even if BBC Enterprises refused them the use of the character of the Doctor. That didn't stop VW from securing the participation of three former Doctors to promote their new VW Golf Estate.

A print advertisement claimed that the new model is "41% bigger on the inside than the hatchback..." Photos were taken of the three Doctors, Jon Pertwee, Peter Davison and Tom Baker peering inside the new VW Golf Estate with a look of shock and wonder, as if peering into the untempered schism itself.

Another photo saw a nattily dressed Jon Pertwee, sizing up the car, not unlike the Third Doctor. In many ways, Pertwee is the greatest Top Gear presenter we never had. He had a real love of cars - and even commissioned his own Whomobile - so it's no real surprise to see him advertising for Volkswagen.
