3. We're Too Tired CBS! Leave Us Alone
With this in mind, do we really want to commit potentially to another nine years? The HIMYM narrative premise demanded that once you become a fan of the show you HAD to watch it to the end in order to determine who the mother is. This eventually became a frustrating fact that meant even as the show became less funny and interesting, we still HAD to watch it for fear of wasting our seven or eight yearlong investment in answering the eponymous question. Whilst screaming 'Why?' at the television when being forced to watch repetitive and/or underdeveloped storylines, we would still tune in week after week in hope of discovering a new snippet of the overarching plot. In fact, one fatal flaw of the narrative frame is that we end up longing for the end of the series so we can find out the answer and instead of mourning the arrival of the final season, it's being met with more of a long sigh of relief. Do we really have the energy for another narrative marathon or should we save ourselves the attention-sapping frustration and not bother investing at all this time? It could mean many viewers make quicker judgements on whether to follow the series. If it's not amazing right from the start, the network may find audiences have little patience to wait and see if it gets any better. Who wants to end up committed to another potentially poor quality show in nine years' time praying for the light at the end of the tunnel?
