4. HIMYM Is Already Passed Its Best What Do the Writers Have Left?
Ted telling Robin he loves her AGAIN, Barney having a dog for a wingman, Marshall pretending to be a sassy, southern lady whilst trying to find his inner goddess... if we're honest, season eight saw some of the more questionable writing from the creative team behind HIMYM. Could they not think of anything better than a dog for a wingman? Seriously? There have been many episodes that have brought cringes and sighs from viewers and this was mostly through regurgitating the same storylines again and again. Whether that was the Robin/Ted/Barney roundabout or Barney falling head over heels for Nora and then Quinn (who was essentially Nora but more appropriate for Barney). Then there's the fact that Marshall and Lily have been demoted to the role of slapstick comic relief. 46 Minutes was a particular low point as Marshall, Lily and her dad Mickey take part in a terrible horror movie spoof that is dripping in cheese. So with Bays and Thomas claiming they are still having so much fun on HIMYM and this is the result, do we really want to see more of this? The truth is HIMYM have thought of a genius premise for a TV series that ensures even when fans are annoyed and losing interest in the show, they still feel compelled to watch to the end of it, if only to answer the series long question of how Ted meets the mother of his children. Does that mean the writers have to care less about holding our attention from episode to episode? It would appear so. When the writers seem tired and out of ideas, what more could they possibly have to offer from the same exhausted concept?
