8 Shows To Fill That Mr. Robot Shaped Hole In Your Life

5. Paranoia Agent

Humans Channel 4
Madhouse

We've found our way to the only animated entry on the list. Paranoia Agent is the brainchild of all-around genius Satoshi Kon, who was responsible for the disturbing, spellbinding Perfect Blue. To this day, Paranoia Agent is woefully underrated, but those who have seen it became devotees - and very annoying at a party after four or five beers when they won't shut up about it.

Paranoia Agent follows an ensemble cast in Tokyo when a teenager wielding a gold baseball bat, dubbed Lil Slugger, begins attacking people. The mystery? Lil Slugger only attacks those who appear to be nearing rock bottom. As it progresses the show plumbs the depths of how depraved and uncaring humanity can be and gradually becomes almost supernatural. We'll stop there, for fear of giving too much away.

To say the show is dark would be an understatement, but it's also a fascinating piece of existential and philosophical art. In particular, the episode 'Happy Family Planning' stands out as not only the best episode of the series, but one of the best episodes of any anime. There's no clear-cut message behind Paranoia Agent and few people will come to the same conclusion, but that's what makes this unnerving, unsettling show so essential.
