8 TV Love Triangles That Worked (And 3 That Didn't)

There was never really a question on which love triangle would receive top billing, was there? This one is the old dilemma that faithful TV viewers have long struggled with: who should Buffy Summers be with? Angel or Spike.

What's interesting about this love triangle is that it wasn't really a love triangle at all. It was simply two separate relationships that our protagonist had during two very different eras of her respective show. Angel was the broody vampire who stole Buffy's heart, while Spike was the rough vampire with no rules, who awoke something dark within her. But, in spite of the time that had passed between the two relationships, viewers were divided on who Buffy's soulmate truly was.

It was arguably the first love triangle that caused such a stir with television viewers, and it no doubt influenced the Twilight franchise and The Vampire Diaries - as well as many of television's other stories of forbidden love. She may have made several tough decisions over the years, but Buffy never had to choose between her two lovers. Just as well, because it would've been a tough choice. However, in the final episode of the hit series, Buffy did call Spike her champion, so perhaps this could be implying that Spike was her one true love?

Interestingly, Buffy actress Sarah Michelle Gellar doesn't seem to think so, as she recently confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that she was Team Angel, saying:

“There was something so beautiful to me about the Buffy and Angel story. I think that Spike understood a different part of who Buffy was and I think she needed to understand that and discover. But for me as Buffy, I think Angel.”

And now for the love triangles that should be forgotten...
