8 TV Shows That Just Wouldn't Die
2. The X-Files
Not only was The X-Files one of the most groundbreaking series of the 90s, it was also insanely popular - especially given its supernatural trappings - with an average viewership of almost 20 million at its peak.
Before Season 7 aired, however, co-star David Duchovny filed a lawsuit against 20th Century Fox, which resulted in him no longer starring in the show for any future seasons. It was then expected that Season 7 would end the series, but instead Mulder was abducted, and the show ran for another two seasons with Gillian Anderson as the focus, and Duchovny making occasional appearances, before it did finish in 2002.
The truth was still out there though, with creator Chris Carter stating his desire to make a feature film after the series ended - something he'd pursue until it eventually did happen in 2008. Even that wasn't the end though, with Carter and the stars hoping to do another movie in 2012. That one didn't come to pass, but the show did eventually return for a limited series back in 2016, the success of which prompted Fox to order yet another season of the show.
Anderson has since stated Season 11 was her last and, while Fox don't have any current plans for more, Carter has said the show could continue without her.
