6. Doctor Who Regurgitates The Same Characters And Villains (And Has Become Needlessly Complex)

When it first began, Doctor Who was a science-fiction show about a man who travelled through time and explored a seemingly infinite universe. Okay, so that's basically what the show is still about, but there's been a subtle shift since the 2005 revival. Things started well, with Christopher Eccleston's season covering plenty of unique, varied ground.

As things progressed, however, and the show's new fanbase got louder and more passionate, several things began to change. For a start, Doctor Who became shackled to endlessly regurgitating the same material due to immense fan pressure. The Daleks can barely go a season without showing up in some “shocking” twist. Reusing fan favourite villains is fine, but it happens so often at this point that the writing is beginning to suffer.

Not only that, the show itself has become needlessly complex and opaque. Endless fan speculation and theorising over certain overarching plot elements (even when there's no mystery to be solved) has forced the writers to begin weaving more and more intricate “twists”, making the whole thing seem convoluted. What was once a sci-fi serial with a different story each week has become a labyrinth of hints and underhanded winks, bringing back the same characters over and over again because of how much fans love them (do we really need to see River Song AGAIN?).
