6. Was 'The Lost Sister' Really That Pointless?

'The Lost Sister' was a divisive episode for fans and critics. Many felt it distracted too heavily from the main plot of the second season, which had at that point escalated into a demodog invasion and certain doom for fan favourite characters. The Duffer brothers seem to have listened to this backlash, as fellow Hawkins' Lab test subject Kali and her gang were not even mentioned.

Does this mean that the entire episode was completely pointless? It appeared as though the writers were teasing other possible super-powered test subjects, perhaps in an homage to the X-Men. Neither Kali nor any of her misfit friends feature in the third season of Stranger Things, despite Eleven's mother urging her to find her sister in the previous instalment.

'The Lost Sister' could be seen as having some metaphorical meaning to the show. It symbolised Eleven's path to heroism. Her choice to return to Mike and her friends rather than stay with Kali and pursue a life of vengeance represented her decision to be a saviour, not a darker version of justice such as The Punisher. There is still time for Kali's character to reappear in Stranger Things with a smoother transition to the main plot.
