1. THAT Jump Scare In The Haunting Of Hill House Was A Genuine Surprise

For those that have seen the indisputably excellent, and absolutely terrifying series helmed by Mike Flanagan, talk of THAT jump scare needs no introduction. For those that haven't though, it's probably best seen to get its full effect. Just make sure you've got a spare pair of trousers with you.

Of course, much of The Haunting of Hill House was meticulously planned before it made it to Netflix, with everything from the subtle turning of statue heads in the background, to the five week rehearsal of the extended long shots, to the almost imperceivable ghostly forms littered throughout all being completed with painstaking attention to detail. The one moment that paid off most impressively, however, was one that required an absolute lack of preparation instead.

The jump scare of Nell - played by Victoria Pedretti - popping up as Theo and Shirley are driving was done so as to get the most natural reaction from the actors, meaning Flanagan scripted an extra half page of dialogue to fool his actors into thinking the scare would come much later. Pedretti, the only one in on the ruse, had no firm place to jump in from. She just decided on her own accord when to bolt up and scare the sh*t out of her costars, resulting in the rest of the cast, and of course the eventual audience, getting a major fright much in the same way.
