It is already established that Seattle Grace's lineup of doctors is basically a team of models who just happened to stumble upon medical school, yet this is not to say that some of them can't actually be good at what they do. They refer to him as McDreamy, obviously because of his dazzling smile and his dreamy blue eyes, but Doctor Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) is also a name that's uttered across the neurosurgery world with awe. This physician, much like his former wife Dr. Montgomery, also has an unbelievable record of surgeries under his belt: a stand-still operation, two double-barrel brain bypasses and separation surgery for adult conjoined twins. During his ten-season career, he was also the lead surgeon on two clinical trials and was appointed the Chief of Surgery. Though his medical abilities are indisputably excellent, Dr. Sheperd's acceptance of his downfalls is what pushes him over the top. Like he once said: "I'm a human being, I make mistakes. I'm flawed, we all are". This is what lets him feel compassion for his patients, what keeps his ego in check and allows him to learn from his mistakes and be the best he can the next time. He starts every surgery with the phase "it's a good day to save lives", and in his capable hands it will be a good day.
