Doctor Who: 20 Things You Didn’t Know About A Christmas Carol

17. Moffat Wrote The Script In Unusual Circumstances

In the first half of 2010, air travel across Europe was thrown into chaos when Eyjafjallajökull (a volcano in Iceland) erupted, billowing clouds of ash into the sky.

This gigantic Earth-sneeze meant that flights were cancelled left, right, and centre, out of fear that aircraft might be damaged. Thousands of people were affected by this, including a certain Scottish showrunner.

Along with Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, Steven Moffat was on a press tour in America around the time of the eruption. Left stranded, he decided to distract himself by writing the script for what would become A Christmas Carol.

There was just one problem – he was in Los Angeles, and it was sweltering. Hardly the most Christmassy place on Earth!

To get into the festive spirit, Moffat kept his air conditioning on full blast and listened to nothing but Christmas songs all day. He must've hated Mariah Carey by the end.
