Agents Of Shield: 5 Ways To Improve The Show

3. Introduce HYDRA

The show just began so it may take some time for a storyline like this to play out, but introducing a competing evil organization like HYDRA would allow for a long-form storytelling device that would immediately impact the complexity and massive scope of the narrative. HYDRA has a long history of competing with S.H.I.E.L.D. since it debuted back in the 1960s and audiences should be familiar with the organization because of its appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger.

This could potentially allow for the return of the Red Skull later down the line, even if Hugo Weaving is unwilling to reprise his role. The makeup effects nearly made him unrecognizable, and as fun of a performance as it was, bringing a Nazi into the modern world seems like too good of an idea to pass up. Having HYDRA as a part of the narrative would allow for double agent reveals that actually matter and come as a surprise, unlike the one in the second episode of the show.

Thankfully, in episode 2, S.H.I.E.L.D. did recover an old HYDRA device, suggesting it is certainly possible that HYDRA becomes a major force in the show.
