Almost Human: 4 Things The Show Needs To Succeed In 2014
4. Character Development For Kennex
Almost Human, as the name might suggest, is a show that's more about John Kennex's android partner, Dorian, than it is about Kennex himself. All character development thus far has rested on Dorian's shoulders, while Kennex has remained pretty much unchanged. It's not a bad thing by any means, but with Kennex acting as the grumpy-on-the-outside action hero from week to week, we're given little to no reason to really care for him, other than how his actions may affect Dorian. Dorian, on the other hand, has been given plenty of chances to shine. The show has been very much about how he is adjusting to living in a world to which he doesn't truly belong. His model of android has been replaced and he wasn't human to begin with, so he's kind of working against a stacked deck. Add the fact that humans are more keen on spending time with the new MX models than the "crazy" DRNs, and it's easy to feel for the guy. As great as it is to see Dorian's character develop and learn from week to week, we need to see some more development with Kennex in order to round out the duo and give us a little more stake in their partnership. And we need more about them as individuals as well. What is their home life like? How does Kennex's bionic leg affect him day-to-day and psychologically? What do Dorian and Kennex do on their days off? Seeing them merely work case-to-case gives us mere glimpses at who they are as characters and it would be nice to see them explored outside of shooting at bad guys.
