7. Is Wiegler Unable To Give Birth?

Wiegler's heated argument with Olivier in the fifth episode reaches its climax when Olivier tells Wiegler that he wants to have a child with her. This is the issue that causes her to lose her breath, the typically unflappable CIA agent finding herself at a rare loss for words. "I told you from the beginning," she says. "That's not possible for me."

This is something of a vague response. It makes sense to assume that her job would simply prevent her from properly caring for a child, but the issue appears to be deeper. Her eyes moisten at the very idea of having a kid, yet the prospect of changing her mind is evidently out of the picture.

She certainly wants to care for someone, demonstrated in the next episode when she photographs Hanna sleeping and tries to help her sleep more comfortably by removing her shoes. If her choice to remain childless is more than a career decision, the remaining possibility is that it's literally not possible for her.

Interestingly enough, at least one Redditor presented this fan theory regardng the original film. This makes sense for a film that likens Wiegler to a witch, as there are indeed some cultures that brand infertile women with the same label.

Amazon's Hanna presents a much more sympathetic version of the character, but her refusal - or perhaps inability - to bear children has caused Olivier to treat her with disdain. The last episode sets Wiegler up to become a hero, so Season 2 just might dive a bit deeper into this particular issue.
