2. Will Trainee 242 Help Free The Others?
It's never fully explained what makes Trainee 249 so different from the other test subjects, but her influence appears to have spread by the end of the season. Trainee 242 initially refused to disregard orders, yet her final moments depict a young woman on the verge of an awakening. Most of this is portrayed through curious looks, first when Trainee 249 opens her door and again when Trainee 217 snitches on 249 for her betrayal of Utrax.
Trainee 242 also appears rather nervous about the transfer to the Wilberforce base. Watching a fellow trainee abandon the program to help Hanna and her father may have been enough to open 242's eyes to the fact that the life she knows is not the best one available to her.
While a previous entry theorized that Trainee 249's parents may have something to do with the differences between her and other test subjects, she does share one curious similarity with Trainee 242. A close look at every subject profile shown on-screen reveals that 242 and 249 are the only two subjects to share the same birthday. All subjects were born in 2004, but they are the only two to be born on September 13th.
The hypothetical phenomenon of twin telepathy is often suggested to be the mere result of two people who share a common bond. This idea could explain why 242 seems more open to the influence of a subject who began both life and training at the same time as her. Trainee 249's desertion may predict a similar betrayal by her birthday buddy. If the rest of the trainees are to be freed in Season 2, then Trainee 242 could play a large role in making it happen.
