American Horror Story: 10 Best Minor Characters

9. Chef Bertie

Shelley American Horror Story Asylum
FX

Introduced in the 1984 chapter, Chef Bertie is the on-site cook who had been working at Camp Redwood for years and years by the time the events of the season take place. The character is portrayed by Tara Karsian and she gives the character a unique identity, despite only appearing in six episodes across the series.

Having been around the camp for yonks in the same role and doing the same things over and over again, Chef Bertie has a playful distinctiveness that really helps her stand out from the other side characters amassed at Redwood. She has a real dirty look to her and certainly won't be on the shortlist for any kitchen cleanliness awards, but her witty remarks, brutal comebacks and obvious pursuits of the young men in the group really make Bertie a fun character on the outside for viewers.

But, her ultimate demise in the season really goes to show the surprising amount of depth the character has, and why Bertie is so much more than just a sleazy cook that usually feels like a staple stereotype for these kinds of slasher stories. She stalls Mr. Jingles admirably well, attempts to defend Xavier by taking on the intruder and her tearful request to be put out of her misery is honestly one of the more touching moments from the season.
