To date, Mare Winningham has portrayed four minor characters in the American Horror Story anthology: Alicia Spencers (the troubled mother of Kyle in Coven), Rita Gayheart (Pepper's sister in Freakshow), Sally Keffler (a politician who ran against Kai in Cult) and Hazel Evers in Hotel. Whilst she has certainly amassed some of the most loathsome characters in the series, the way in which Winningham is able to establish a presence in such a short space of time is seriously commendable.

However, out of all of her memorable characters, Hotel's Hazel Evers stands out the best.

A longstanding employee at the Hotel Cortez, Evers is a cheery laundress who has a particularly close devotion to Mr. March. Seeing her merrily busying herself by cleaning up bloodied rags and and other evidence of Mr. March's brutal acts is one of the more strange dynamics going on in Hotel, but it nevertheless helps sell just how crazed this season's setting really is.

On top of that, it's her loyalty, cheeriness and faith towards Mr. March that really sells in the tragedy of Hazel Evers' arc, and her eventual downfall at the hands of her employer is still one of the most upsetting betrayals in the show's history.
