American Horror Story: 10 Most Hated Episodes
8. The Seven Wonders (S3E13)
American Horror Story: Coven was, overall, a well-received season.
The addition of new faces (including Gabourey Sidibe, Kathy Bates, and Angela Bassett) with the familiar recurring cast built the season up as one of the best, continuing the show's impressive track record. And as the season played out, it achieved most of that promise. But the season finale left many fans feeling a bit let down.
The titular coven loses its head witch, the Supreme (played by Jessica Lange), in the penultimate episode. Her daughter Cordelia steps in temporarily to lead until the next Supreme is determined. The finale's whole plot is figuring out which of the four young witches in the house will rise to the position.
In order to crown the new Supreme, each of the candidates must perform all of the Seven Wonders: Telekinesis, Concilium (mind control), Pyrokinesis, Descensum (astral projection), Transmutation (teleportation), Vitalum Vitalis (reviving the dead), and Divination.
Each girl fails in one of the wonders, but with a little push from fellow witch Myrtle, Cordelia enters the competition. Cordelia ultimately wins, becoming the new Supreme. She then goes on to reveal the existence of witches to the public and opens the doors of the Coven to all.
It wasn't an awful finale, but it didn't live up to the high expectations of the season. It felt pointless to build up Misty as the favorite to become Supreme especially when she's the first to fail. And ultimately, none of the four young witches achieved the title.
