American Horror Story: 10 Most Hated Episodes
5. Checking In (S5E1)
The fifth season of American Horror Story already had a large uphill climb before it even began. With the departure of series favorite and powerhouse Jessica Lange, fans wondered who would step in to fill her large shoes.
When it was announced Lady Gaga would be joining the cast, there were mixed feelings throughout the fandom. Some were curious to see how Mother Monster would fit into the story. Others felt it was a shameless attempt to draw in new audiences.
From its first episode, Hotel didn't hold any punches. Introducing many of the major players quickly, it still didn't prove to many fans that Gaga was a good fit. Many felt she fit the style of the Hotel Cortez, but her acting left a lot to be desired. Too much music video visuals and not enough compelling character.
But Gaga wasn't the only misstep. Seemingly an attempt to return to the shock and horror of the rubber man from the very first season of American Horror Story, the appearance of the Addiction Demon was touted as the most disturbing scene in the history of the series.
But as with Gaga's performance, it felt more included for visual needs instead of compelling storytelling.
Overall, the opening episode of the fifth season was praised for its appealing visuals, but panned for lack of depth and interesting characters and story.
