8. Dr Arden Is An Alien
From an unhinged cult leader to
murderous spirits, there are plenty of despicable characters within American
Horror Story; but none are arguably as evil as Briarcliff Manor’s lead physician
Dr Arthur Arden (aka Hans Gruper).
Arden is a Nazi doctor who sawed off the legs of Freak Show leading lady Elsa Mars (Jessica Lange) before rising through the ranks conducting horrific experiments at a concentration camp. He has a penchant for torturing his so-called patients in unspeakable ways, a work ethic he took with him to the asylum in the show’s second series.
Being American Horror Story there are plenty of other oddities occurring at this asylum including a demonically possessed nun, a serial killer, and – the strangest of them all – aliens. And fan theories have made Arden even stranger, by speculating that he is actually one of the aliens.
This theory draws similarities between Arden and the aliens’ shared enjoyment of experimenting on the asylum patients. Likewise, Kit (Evan Peters) initially believes him to be an alien when they meet, and it's suggested by some characters that Arden has something inhuman about his genitals.
It’s a strange theory. But stranger things have happened in the world of American Horror Story.
