American Horror Story: 10 Most Insane Fan Theories

6. Cult's Clown Cult Was Started By Dandy

Though it may be one of the most polarising series for fans, Cult nevertheless contains the charm and grotesqueness that viewers have come to expect from American Horror Story.

Despite removing itself from the historic context of previous seasons (aside from the occasional flashback), Cult still featured plenty of nods to other series. One of the most notable for fans was the appearance the ever-creepy Twisty the clown from Freak Show, who’s featured in a horror comic in Cult’s first episode. But what if this connection went deeper than we thought?

Clowns are also a huge part of the seventh season: they’re what Kai’s (Peters) cult choose to dress as when they terrorise Aly (Sarah Paulson), who suffers from extreme coulrophobia.

An intriguing theory that deranged fourth season antagonist Dandy Mott (Finn Wittrock), who became obsessed with Twisty, is the real root of Kai’s clown cult. The theory goes that Kai was inspired to use clowns from Dandy's own clown-based serial killer shenanigans.

While there is no hard evidence to supporting this fan theory (Mott is never even mentioned in Cult), it’s still a fun way for Dandy to live on after his death in Freak Show.
