American Horror Story: 10 Saddest Deaths

Amongst all the cruelty and death trapped within the fifth season's Hotel Cortez, there was one ray of light, and that was bartender Liz Taylor (Denis O'Hare).

Originally arriving at the hotel on a business trip in the 1980s, Liz was suffering from gender dysphoria until she met The Countess. The vampiric owner of the establishment instantly sensed and sympathised with Liz's struggle and helped her transition into who she is now. Grateful for her help, Liz would leave her old life behind and take a job at the hotel's Blue Parrot Lounge.

Over the ensuing years, Liz would get to know all the Cortez's undead residents and would become somewhat of a maternal figure and friend to them.

At the end of the series, however, Liz announces that she has terminal cancer. Rather than spending the last days of her life in hospital, she decides to end her life at the hotel so that she might live on with her surrogate family.

To the moving soundtrack of Marianne Faithfull's 'The Ballad Of Lucy Jones', Liz allows a tearful Countess to slit her throat.

In AHS, death isn't always the end. For Liz, it was a new beginning.
