American Horror Story: 10 Scariest Moments

8. The Monsignor's Crucifixion (Asylum)

Okay, so Monsignor Timothy Howard (Joseph Fiennes) wasn't perhaps one of American Horror Story's's most popular lead characters, but he proved to be an intriguing moral force, darker beneath the surface than he appeared, and more powerless than his title allowed him to be. Timothy proved his mettle in various ways, such as the mercy killing of one of Arden's mutated experiments, and in ridding the asylum of the Devil that possessed the body and soul of the sweet Sister Mary Eunice. However, the Monsignor's most memorable moment isn't a heroic one - it's a brutally violent one. Whilst trying to give psychotic murderer Leigh Emerson (a scene-stealing Ian McShane) baptism and redemption, the Monsignor is knocked out by Emerson who then brutalises and crucifies the man of God in his own church, nailing him to the large cross inside the church, and leaving him for the mercy of the Angel of Death, Shachath (Frances Conroy). It's a brutal scene, particularly for those of the Christian faith, and it's no wonder Monsignor Howard's journey became even darker following that terrifying ordeal...
