American Horror Story: Apocalypse - 2 Ups & 5 Downs From ‘Fire And Reign’
Downs...
5. It Doesn't Really Escalate Things
As mentioned earlier, Fire and Reign is the penultimate episode of Apocalypse, meaning that the story comes to an end next week. However, you'd never guess that from watching it, as not an awful lot transpires, and the instalment feels like nothing more than you're average episode of American Horror Story. Sure, there's that epic Terminator-esque face-off between Michael and the witches where he obliterates almost all of the coven, but given that we know the likes of Zoe are alive in the present day narrative, this massacre feels unworthy of a place in the second-to-last episode.
What's more, the conclusion - which sees Michael introduce himself to the members of the Cooperative before proceeding to inform them of his mission - does little to suggest that the story comes to an end next week.
The penultimate episodes of Murder House, Asylum, Coven and Roanoke were all incredibly enticing, and left us dying to know how this story was going to end. The perfect penultimate episode of Apocalypse would have returned the story to the present day events, and seen Cordelia and Michael confab one last time, before next week's finale reveals which of the two powerful beings comes up victorious.
