American Horror Story: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best (So Far)
2. Season Three: Coven
Coven is a staggering achievement. Featuring a predominantly female cast, all playing tough, independent and badass women, AHS's third outing is a stylish, intelligent and consistent season filled with excellent characters, plot twists, imagery and villains.
Kathy Bates' Delphine LaLaurie is a sinister and callous villain, who Bates plays with complete conviction. Lily Rabe, Taissa Farmiga and Emma Roberts are all on excellent form as strong, complex and thrilling-to-watch witches, and Jessica Lange gives a wonderfully layered performance as Fiona Goode, a witch who doesn't want to let go of her power and youth.
Despite all the great performances given this season, Angela Bassett steals the top spot as Marie Laveau, a voodoo witch who has lived through centuries of death, tragedy and prejudice.
There are some issues with the season, though. Stevie Nicks' cameo is a bit off-putting despite being quite funny, and Evan Peters feels a tad underused as love-interest Kyle Spencer, but aside from these slight hiccups Coven is about as good as American Horror Story ever gets.
