American Horror Story: Ranking Sarah Paulson's Characters From Worst To Best
3. Shelby Miller
Before taking on the role of Audrey in Roanoke, Paulson portrayed a fictionalised version of AHS character Shelby Miller. The Emmy-winning actress once again highlighted her ability to scream like a pro during the 'My Roanoke Nightmare'-themed batch of episodes, and delivered a phenomenal - albeit underrated - performance.
Shelby found herself caught in the middle of a horrifying situation, and ultimately endured all sorts of horrors over the course of the five episodes. Paulson's iteration of Shelby showed an unrelenting desire to live - even more so than her 'real-life' counterpart - stopping at nothing to protect her family.
Because Paulson was pretty magnificent in her portrayal of Shelby, it was rather hard to connect with Lily Rabe's 'real-life' iteration, who heavily featured during both the documentary-style scenes and the 'Return to Roanoke' segments.
It's also worth noting that Shelby is the first time that Paulson featured in a leading capacity, playing the sole protagonist. if her performance proved anything, it's that she's more than capable of stepping into Jessica Lange's shoes.
