Angel: Every Season Ranked From Worst To Best

2. Season One

Angel TV show
Mutant Enemy Productions

Season One of Angel had a lot of pressure on its shoulders going in. The expectations of what the spin-off would bring were seriously high and it was wondered whether it would even work. It's safe to say, though, that Angel's debut shattered any doubts anyone had about the show, and pulled off a modern miracle.

The tone is gloomy and darker than Buffy, which proved a welcome and well-crafted narrative choice. Also, it re-introduced fans to Cordelia Chase, beginning a fantastic arc and a genuinely effective relationship between her and Angel.

Doyle was a solid addition, too, and his (spoiler) death in only the ninth episode of the season helped cement Angel as a risky and more mature take on the Buffyverse.

We also met Wolfram and Hart, who make for a brilliant show-long villain, and were re-introduced to Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, who proves much better suited to Angel than Buffy. In order to understand just how unique and clever the show is, you need look no further than episodes like "City Of", "I Will Remember You", "Hero" and "Five By Five".

This also also does well with connecting itself to Buffy whilst being its own show, featuring guest spots from Buffy, Oz, Spike, and Faith, all of whom get some solid mini-arcs.

It's a hell of start to a hell of a show.
